Global Antiquity and the Mediterranean

The ancient Mediterranean is often the area of the globe most associated with the ancient world, and its antiquity has long been prized and promoted. It encompasses Egypt, the Levant, Greece, Rome, as well as Byzantium and the Islamic world, and these cultures may often serve as entry points for inquiry into all ancient worlds.

The Cunard Center strives to continue to highlight the bearing and legacy their innovations, for example, Greek democracy, have on the present. At the same time, the Center promotes contemporary, innovative approaches to the study of the ancient Mediterranean. These lines of investigation include the formative entanglements of Mediterranean cultures with their neighbors in Africa, Europe, and West Asia and their modern reception by peoples across the globe.
