The Department of Classics invites you to a lecture by Professor Alex Knodell (Classics and Archaeology, Carleton College) titled Small Islands and Big Histories: A View from the Margins of the Early Greek World. The event will take place on Thursday, January 30 in Dodd 248 at 4:00 pm. For more information, please see the flyer above and the description below.

Description: This talk examines patterns of settlement, connectivity, and mobility among the islands of the early Greek world. In particular, it reflects on the results of the Small Cycladic Islands Project, which has carried out systematic surveys of 87 currently uninhabited islands in the central Aegean. The collective results allow us to identify new patterns in island colonization, Bronze Age networks, and Iron Age political behaviors from the perspective of places that are often overlooked in “big-picture” histories of early Greece. This view from the margins, therefore, tells us something essential about a type of Mediterranean microenvironment that is both understudied and ubiquitous.
